Dit boek viert het leven en werk van Marthe Donas, de eerste vrouwelijke kunstenaar geboren in Antwerpen die internationale erkenning verwierf binnen de avant-garde. Haar doorbraak kwam in 1919 met een solotentoonstelling in Genève, waar haar kenmerkende stijl, met innovatieve vormen in parelmoerachtige tinten, meteen opviel.

Als prominent lid van het kubistische collectief La Section d’Or werkte Donas nauw samen met beeldhouwer Alexander Archipenko, wiens invloed haar artistieke visie mede vormgaf. Deze kosmopolitische groep, waartoe ook Georges Braque, Fernand Léger en Constantin Brancusi behoorden, trok tal van baanbrekende vrouwelijke kunstenaars aan, zoals Natalia Goncharova en Marie Vassilieff. Deze publicatie plaatst Donas en Archipenko binnen een internationale context en belicht hun banden met andere kunstenaars.

Magnificent monograph on Marthe Donas and Alexander Archipenko, a rediscoverable artist duo from the avant-garde

This book celebrates the life and work of Marthe Donas, the first female artist born in Antwerp to gain international recognition within the avant-garde. Her breakthrough came in 1919 with a solo exhibition in Geneva, where her distinctive style, featuring innovative forms in pearlescent tones, immediately stood out.

As a prominent member of the Cubist collective La Section d’Or, Donas worked closely with sculptor Alexander Archipenko, whose influence helped shape her artistic vision. This cosmopolitan group, which also included Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, and Constantin Brancusi, attracted many groundbreaking female artists such as Natalia Goncharova and Marie Vassilieff. This publication places Donas and Archipenko within an international context and highlights their connections with other artists.
