The Family of Migrants is geïnspireerd op de iconische tentoonstelling The Family of Man – een eerbetoon aan de mensheid, samengesteld door fotograaf en curator Edward Steichen, dat in 1955 te zien was in het MoMA in New York.

Dit prachtig geïllustreerde boek brengt zo’n 200 indringende beelden samen die universele, tijdloze verhalen vertellen over mensen in beweging, zoals vertrek, reis, aankomst, familie, verlies en liefde.

Tot de beelden behoren zowel opnamen van onbekende fotografen als iconische foto’s van onder anderen Lewis Hine, Chien-Chi Chang, Abbas, Robert de Hartogh, Wang Fuchun, Dorothea Lange, Stephan Vanfleteren, Ara Güler, Leonard Freed, Ata Kandó en Ishiuchi Miyako.

Met tekstbijdragen van Joumana El Zein Khoury, Stine Jensen, Hanneke Mantel, Rim Battal, Rodaan Al Galidi, Danny Ramadan, Anke Reitz, C Pam Zhang en Asma Khan.

Deze publicatie verschijnt naar aanleiding van de opening van het museum Fenix in Rotterdam op 16 mei 2025, waar alle foto’s uit het boek te zien zullen zijn op de gelijknamige tentoonstelling.

Two hundred poignant photographs from past and present tell universal and timeless stories of people on the move

The Family of Migrants is inspired by the legendary exhibition The Family of Man, an ode to humanity created by photographer and curator Edward Steichen, that opened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1955. This book features around 200 photographs and will show the most striking photography that tells universal, timeless stories of human existence, such as departure, journey and arrival, and themes like family, loss and love.

Among the hundreds of images are iconic as well as unknown photos by, among many others, Lewis Hine, Chien-Chi Chang, Abbas, Robert de Hartogh, Wang Fuchun, Dorothea Lange, Stephan Vanfleteren, Ara Güler, Leonard Freed, Ata Kandó and Ishiuchi Miyako.

The Family of Migrants a été inspirée par l'emblématique exposition The Family of Man, un hommage à l'humanité organisé par le photographe et conservateur Edward Steichen, présentée au MoMA de New York en 1955.

Cet ouvrage magnifiquement illustré rassemble quelque 200 images poignantes traitant de thèmes universels et intemporels liés aux personnes que le destin a mises sur les routes : départ, voyage, arrivée, famille, perte et amour.

Des clichés de photographes inconnus côtoient ceux de noms célèbres comme Lewis Hine, Chien-Chi Chang, Abbas, Robert de Hartogh, Wang Fuchun, Dorothea Lange, Stephan Vanfleteren, Ara Güler, Leonard Freed, Ata Kandó et Ishiuchi Miyako.

Avec des textes de Joumana El Zein Khoury, Stine Jensen, Hanneke Mantel, Rim Battal, Rodaan Al Galidi, Danny Ramadan, Anke Reitz, C. Pam Zhang et Asma Khan.
