De kunst van Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian slaat een brug tussen het westerse modernisme en de rijke visuele tradities van de islamitische kunst

Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian (Qazvin, 1922–Teheran, 2019), dat is licht en beweging, abstractie en geometrie. Herhaling, weerspiegeling en veelvoudigheid lopen als een rode draad door haar botanische tekeningen, spiegelmozaïeken en driedimensionale assemblages.

Haar heel persoonlijke, grensoverschrijdende taal is de vrucht van het samengaan van de twee elementen die haar hebben gevormd: de nieuwe artistieke stromingen uit het naoorlogse New York en het Teheran van de jaren 1960 en 1970, en de eeuwenoude Iraanse beeldcultuur – zowel islamitische kunst en architectuur als traditionele ambachten.

Dit boek biedt een gelaagd portret van een kunstenares die een brug slaat tussen het wereldwijde twintigste-eeuwse modernisme en de hedendaagse kunst. Tijd, plaats en politieke breuken hebben geen vat op de formele helderheid en de originele kracht van haar werk.

Deze publicatie verschijnt naar aanleiding de tentoonstelling Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian: Teheran/New York in Moderna Museet Stockholm van 3 oktober 2026 tot 28 februari 2027. De tentoonstelling reist daarna door naar Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid en Kunstmuseum Den Haag.

Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian’s art forges a link between Western modernism and the rich visual traditions of Islamic art

Light and movement, abstraction and geometry lie at the heart of the oeuvre of Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian (b. Qazvin, 1922–d. Tehran, 2019). From botanical drawings to mirror mosaics and three-dimensional assemblages, her body of work unfolds through a logic of repetition, reflection, and multiplicity.

She was equally shaped by the artistic movements that emerged in postwar New York and in Tehran during the 1960s and ’70s, as by the traditions of Iranian visual culture, including Islamic art and architecture, and craft practices. Together, these elements laid the foundation of a visual idiom that is as personal as it is boundary-crossing.

This publication offers a layered portrait of an artist whose practice bridges twentieth-century global modernisms and contemporary art. Across time, place, and political rupture, Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian’s work continues to unfold with remarkable formal clarity and inventive force.
