Harmonieus kleurgebruik en tedere verftoetsen in een prachtig overzichtswerk van Anna Boch

De veelzijdige Anna Boch (1848–1936) was niet alleen een getalenteerd kunstenaar maar ook een goed geïnformeerde verzamelaar, een groot mecenas en een enthousiaste reiziger die van muziek en architectuur hield. Als enige vrouw was ze lid van de prominente kunstenaarsverenigingen Les XX en La Libre Esthétique en werd ze door haar collega’s op gelijke voet behandeld. Geïnspireerd door geestesgenoten als Théo van Rysselberghe, Paul Signac en Georges Seurat legde Anna Boch zich toe op een persoonlijke variant van het neo-impressionisme.

Anna Bochs heldere schilderijen illustreren haar zoektocht naar lijn en kleur. Haar passie voor de natuur bracht haar naar afgelegen plaatsen en deed haar dromen van de schoonheid van bucolische landschappen die ze wilde doorgronden. Ze hield van de zee en wist het licht en de reflectie ervan op de kust op een weergaloze manier te vangen en om te zetten in intrigerende, maar bovenal tijdloze composities. Dit boek presenteert haar oeuvre in meer dan 100 werken en plaatst Anna Boch resoluut in de kunstgeschiedenis van de negentiende en de twintigste eeuw.

Dit boek verschijnt naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling Anna Boch, een impressionistische reis van 1 juli tot 5 november 2023 in Mu.ZEE, Oostende, en van 3 februari tot 26 mei 2024 in Musée de Pont-Aven.

L’artiste polyvalente Anna Boch (1848-1936) n’est pas seulement une peintre de talent, mais aussi une collectionneuse avertie, une mécène de haut vol et une voyageuse enthousiaste, amatrice de musique et d’architecture. Seule femme membre des cercles artistiques d’avant-garde Les XX et La Libre Esthétique, elle est considérée par ses confrères sur un pied d’égalité. Inspirée notamment par Théo van Rysselberghe, Paul Signac et Georges Seurat, Anna Boch se consacre à une variante personnelle du néo-impressionnisme.

Les tableaux lumineux d’Anna Boch illustrent sa quête de la ligne et de la couleur. Sa passion pour la nature la conduit dans des endroits reculés, rêvant à la beauté de paysages bucoliques dont elle veut s’imprégner. Fascinée par la mer, elle capte la lumière et ses reflets sur la côte avec une intensité inégalée et les convertit en compositions insolites, mais surtout intemporelles. Cet ouvrage, qui présente son œuvre à travers plus de 100 créations, inscrit résolument Anna Boch dans l’histoire de l’art des XIX^e et XX^e siècles.

Ce livre paraît à l’occasion de l’exposition Anna Boch, un voyage impressionniste, organisée du 1^er juillet au 5 novembre 2023 au Mu.ZEE à Ostende et du 3 février au 26 mai 2024 au Musée de Pont-Aven.

Harmonious use of colour and delicate paintwork in a superb overview of the artist Anna Boch

The versatile Anna Boch (1848–1936) was not only a talented artist, but also a highly knowledgeable collector, generous patron, and enthusiastic traveller with a great love of music and architecture. She was the only woman to become a member of the prominent art societies Les XX and La Libre Esthétique, and she was treated as an equal by her fellow artists. Inspired by kindred spirits including Théo van Rysselberghe, Paul Signac and Georges Seurat, Anna Boch set about developing her own personal version of Neo-Impressionism.

Anna Boch’s lucid paintings chart her search for line and colour. Her passion for nature took her to remote destinations and imbued her with dreams of beautiful bucolic landscapes that she wanted to interpret. She loved the sea and succeeded in capturing the light and its reflection upon the coast with unparalleled skill, translating it into intriguing but above all timeless compositions. This book presents her oeuvre with more than 100 works, and resolutely claims a place for Anna Boch in the art history of the 19^th and 20^th centuries.
