Phoebus Focus XXXII

Als eenzame wandelaar in het ochtendgloren van Oostende laat Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) zich begeesteren door de desolate en onheilspellende verlatenheid van de zeedijk. De fascinatie voor ruimtewerking en de expressie van oneindigheid liggen aan de grondslag van de talrijke dijkzichten die Spilliaert tussen 1907 en 1909 creëert en waarmee hij een unieke formele vernieuwing inluidt. Anne Adriaens-Pannier (1951) was van 1974 tot 2011 als conservator en departementshoofd verbonden aan de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België te Brussel. Ze beheerde de verzameling werken op papier van het Museum Moderne Kunst en organiseerde talrijke monografische en thematische tentoonstellingen. In 1989 vatte ze haar onderzoek naar het leven en werk van Léon Spilliaert aan en in 2003 promoveerde ze met een proefschrift over deze kunstenaar aan de Universiteit Gent. Hieruit vloeiden talrijke publicaties en het voorbereidend werk voor haar catalogue raisonné over Spilliaert voort. In 2006 verscheen onder meer de monografie Léon Spilliaert, de bezielde blik, die later vertaald werd in het Engels (Léon Spilliaert, from the Depths of the Soul, 2019).

Als bestuurder was ze verbonden aan de Stichting Walter Leblanc (2011-2015) en het Museum Art & Marges, beide in Brussel; als voorzitter leidde ze de Stichting Luc Peire in Knokke (2012-2018). Sinds 2012 staat Anne aan het hoofd van het Fonds Jos Knaepen van de Koning Boudewijnstichting en sinds 2015 van de Aankoopcommissie Erfgoedfonds van de Stichting. Vanaf 2016 tot 2021 was ze artistiek directeur van Het Spilliaert Huis in Oostende en organiseerde ze er acht thematische tentoonstellingen. In 2020 was ze de curator van de retrospectieve tentoonstelling over Spilliaert in de Londense Royal Academy en het Parijse Musée d’Orsay. Ook in 2023 plaatst Anne Spilliaert in de kijker: niet alleen in deze Phoebus Focus maar ook met een overzichtstentoonstelling in de Fondation de l’Hermitage in Lausanne en met een dialoogtentoonstelling waarin werken van de schilder gecombineerd worden met die van beeldhouwer George Minne in het Clemens Sels Museum in Neuss. Daarnaast werkt Anne aan een nieuwe publicatie: de geannoteerde briefwisseling van en naar Spilliaert, gekoppeld aan een uitgebreide biografie.

Anne Adriaens-Pannier (1951) was curator and head of department at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels from 1974 to 2011. She worked at the Museum of Modern Art, where she managed the collection of works on paper and organised numerous monographic and themed exhibitions. In 1989, she began her research into the life and work of Léon Spilliaert and in 2003, she obtained her PhD with a thesis on the artist at Ghent University. This was followed by many publications and the preparatory work for her catalogue raisonné on Spilliaert. In 2006, her works included the monograph Léon Spilliaert, de bezielde blik, which was later translated into English (Léon Spilliaert, from the Depths of the Soul, 2019).

As director, she was associated with the Walter Leblanc Foundation (2011-2015) and the Museum Art & Marges, both in Brussels. She was also president of the Luc Peire Foundation in Knokke (2012-2018). Anne has been head of the King Baudouin Foundation’s Jos Knaepen Fund since 2012 and the Foundation’s Heritage Fund Acquisition Committee since 2015. From 2016 to 2021, she was artistic director of Het Spilliaert Huis in Ostend, where she organised eight themed exhibitions. In 2020, she curated the retrospective on Spilliaert at the London Royal Academy and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Anne is also placing Spilliaert in the spotlight in 2023, not only in this Phoebus Focus, but also with a retrospective at the Fondation de l’Hermitage in Lausanne and through an exhibition at the Clemens Sels Museum in Neuss in which works by the artist will engage in dialogue with those of sculptor George Minne. Anne is working on a new publication too: Spilliaert’s annotated correspondence, combined with a comprehensive biography.
