Phoebus Focus XXXV

16 september 2016. In de kerk van San Sebastián, een buitenwijk van de Peruviaanse stad Cuzco, raakt de ene elektrische draad de andere. Wanneer het vuur omstreeks de middag eindelijk is geblust, blijkt zowat tachtig procent van het kerkinterieur vergaan tot stof en as. In een beweging verdween zo een gigantisch deel van het oeuvre van schilder Quispe Tito (ca. 1611-1681).

Deze editie van Phoebus Focus draait om Quispe Tito’s Heilige Familie in Nazareth, en om de bonte mix aan verbanden tussen een schilderij, gemaakt in een gloednieuwe wereld, en een prent uit een veel oudere. Heilige Familie slaat een brug tussen twee culturen, tussen het denken van de jezuïeten en het erfgoed van de Inca’s. Wat volgt, is een verhaal over artistieke en culturele erfenissen.

Katharina Van Cauteren (1981) staat als stafchef aan het hoofd van de Kanselarij van The Phoebus Foundation. Katharina is doctor in de kunstwetenschappen en maakte reeds tal van tentoonstellingen in binnen- en buitenland. Ze bracht Rubens voor het eerst naar India, liet deNederlanders kennis maken met Jacob Jordaens, en bracht Emile Claus en Rik Wouters naar Engeland. Intussen sleepte ze Memling, Metsys, Rubens en Van Dyck de wereld rond, van Tallinn (Estland) tot Denver en Dallas (VS). En ook in eigen land zat Katharina niet stil en was ze het brein achter tentoonstellingen over uiteenlopende thema’s als de Antwerpse Academie, kant, portretkunst en altijd weer die Vlaamse meesters uit de vijftiende, zestiende en zeventiende eeuw. Daarbij werkt ze samen met ander creatief talent zoals modeontwerper Walter Van Beirendonck, hedendaagse kunstenaars, productiehuizen en radiomakers. De optelsom is steeds opnieuw een totaalbelevenis: een roller-coaster ride door de kunstgeschiedenis.

Met Politiek & Schilderkunst schreef Katharina het standaardwerk over de Brusselse schilder Hendrick De Clerck (1560-1630) en de politieke ambities van de aartshertogen Albrecht en Isabella. Daarnaast publiceerde ze tal van boeken en artikels over vijftiende- tot zeventiende-eeuwse kunst en over de kunst van Sint-Martens-Latem, Ensor, Tytgat en Wouters. In de Phoebus Focus-reeks bracht ze eerder al het intrigerende Meermonster van Tagua Tagua (spreekwoordelijk) tot leven, en kleedde ze Hendrick De Clercks Suzanna en de ouderlingen laagje voor laagje uit. Want waar beeldvoorstellingen zijn, vallen verhalen te vertellen…

Phoebus Focus XXXV

The date: 16 September 2016. The place: Peru, where, in the church of San Sebastián in a suburb of Cuzco, one electrical wire touches another. When the fire is finally extinguished around midday, some eighty per cent of the church interior has been reduced to cinders. In just a few hours, a huge part of the oeuvre of Quispe Tito (c.1611-1681) perished.

This edition of Phoebus Focus turns the spotlight on Quispe Tito’s Holy Family in Nazareth and the motley mix of connections between a painting produced in a brand-new world and a print made in a much older one. Holy Family bridges Jesuit thought and Inca heritage. It tells a tale of artistic and cultural legacies and idiosyncratic interpretations.

Katharina Van Cauteren (1981) is head of the Chancellery of The Phoebus Foundation. A passionate art historian and exhibition maker, she has showcased artists from Flanders and the Low Countries around the world. She took Rubens to India for the first time, introduced the Dutch to Jacob Jordaens, and brought Emile Claus and Rik Wouters to the UK. She has sent Memling, Metsys, Rubens and Van Dyck from Tallinn (Estonia) to Denver (USA) and points beyond. In Belgium she has spotlighted the Flemish masters of the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in a variety of new ways and masterminded exhibitions on such diverse themes as the Antwerp Academy, lace, and portraiture. She also collaborates with other creatives – fashion designers, contemporary artists, production houses and radio makers. Invariably the result is a total experience, a roller-coaster ride through art history.

With Politics as Painting. Hendrick De Clerck (1560-1630) and the Archducal Enterprise of Empire, Van Cauteren has written the standard work on the Brussels painter Hendrick De Clerck and the political ambitions of Archdukes Albert and Isabella. She has also published extensively on the art of the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as well as the more recent artists of Sint-Martens-Latem, and James Ensor, Edgard Tytgat and Rik Wouters. In the Phoebus Focus series she has brought the exotic Mere-Monster of Lake Tagua Tagua to intriguing life and uncovered Hendrick De Clerck’s Susanna and the Elders layer by layer.
