Phoebus Focus XXV

In Heilige Begga schrijft Leen Kelchtermans over religieuze vrouwen en hun devotie maar ook over katholiek en dynastiek machtsvertoon. Ze neemt de lezer mee van de zevende naar de zeventiende eeuw en vertelt hoe Begga, dochter van Itta van Nijvel (ca. 592-652) en Pepijn de Oudere (ca. 580-639), in 1630 aangewezen wordt als stichteres van de bloeiende begijnenbeweging. Rond 1635 penseelde de Vlaamse barokke topper Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) Heilige Begga, een schilderij dat bulkt van de boeiende verhalen. Deze editie van ‘Phoebus Focus’ maakt zowel van de heilige Begga als van Jacob Jordaens weer mensen van vlees en bloed.

In de reeks ‘Phoebus Focus’ gaan experts en wetenschappers in op topstukken uit de rijke collectie van kunststichting The Phoebus Foundation.

Leen Kelchtermans (1986) studeerde Kunstwetenschappen aan de KU Leuven en voltooide de Research Master in deze discipline aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Als aspirant van het Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek-Vlaanderen schreef ze een proefschrift over de topografische strijdtaferelen van de Brusselse schilder Peter Snayers. In deze eerste oeuvrestudie hanteerde ze een contextuele en cross-disciplinaire onderzoeksmethode om de betekenislagen van vroegmoderne oorlogsschilderijen te doorgronden. Na haar promotie werkte Leen als postdoctoraal vorser aan de KU Leuven. Momenteel is ze wetenschappelijk onderzoeker bij de Kanselarij van The Phoebus Foundation.

Phoebus Focus XXV

In St Begga Leen Kelchtermans examines strong, religious women and their devotion, and Catholic and dynastic displays of power. She whisks the reader away to between the seventh and seventeenth centuries and elaborates on the way Begga, daughter of Itta of Metz (c.592-652) and Pepin the Elder (c.580-639), was officially appointed as the foundress of the flourishing beguine movement in 1630. Around 1635 the Flemish Baroque master Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) portrayed St Begga, a painting that abounds with captivating stories. This edition of ‘Phoebus Focus’ restores both St Begga and Jacob Jordaens to flesh and blood human beings.

Leen Kelchtermans (1986) studied Art History at the University of Leuven and completed a Research Master in Art Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Her predoctoral dissertation for the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) focused on the topographical battle scenes of the seventeenth-century Brussels painter Peter Snayers. In this first oeuvre study, she applied contextual and cross-disciplinary research methods to explore the layers of meaning in early modern war paintings. Leen subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Leuven. She is currently active as an art-historical researcher at the Chancellery of The Phoebus Foundation.
